Chaitra Purnima (March-April) — most common; some traditions observe Kartik krishna chaturdashi; Tamil Hanuman Jayanthi in Margashirsha · pan-india, diaspora
Birth of Hanuman, son of Anjana and Vayu, with Shiva's amsa, at Anjaneri (Maharashtra) or Hampi (Karnataka) per regional tradition.
Hanumān Jayantī celebrates the birth of Lord Hanumān — the vānara devotee of Sri Rāma, son of the Wind-god Vāyu (and per some traditions, an aṃśa of Śiva), and the most-beloved figure in Hindu protective devotion. The Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa names his birth on Caitra Pūrṇimā (the full moon of March-April), six days after Rāma's birth on Caitra śukla navamī.
Hanumān's birth-narrative weaves together multiple traditions. His mother Añjanā, an apsarā cursed to be born as a vānarī, performed severe tapas at Anjaneri (Maharashtra) or Hampi (Karnataka, per regional tradition). Vāyu carried Śiva's seed-essence and impregnated her — making Hanumān technically a Rudra-aṃśa (eleventh Rudra) as well as Vāyu's son. The infant Hanumān, mistaking the rising sun for a fruit, leapt to grab it; Indra struck him with the vajra to protect the sun. From this his name Hanumān ('one with a broken jaw') derives. Vāyu in grief withdrew the wind from the world; the gods restored Hanumān and granted him the boons that made him invincible.
Hanumān's role in the Rāmāyaṇa — finding Sītā in Lanka, leaping the ocean, burning Lanka, fetching the Sañjīvanī herb to revive Lakṣmaṇa — established him as the supreme servant-warrior. He is a cirañjīvī (immortal); per tradition he still walks the earth wherever Rāma's name is being recited. Tulsidās's Hanumān Cālīsā (16th century) — 40 verses of Awadhi devotional poetry — became the most-recited Hindi-language stotra ever written. North Indian Hanumān Jayantī observes Caitra Pūrṇimā; Tamil tradition observes Mārgaśīrṣa Amāvāsyā; Karnataka observes a 41-day Hanumān-vrata ending on a specific Pūrṇimā.
Hanumān is the perfect bhakta — service so complete that the self disappears entirely into the served. He has no separate desires from Rāma's; he is described as 'rāma-kāja kīnho' — having done Rāma's work. His strength is therefore the strength of total surrender (śaraṇāgati) — he can leap oceans because he has nothing left to hold him back. Hanumān Jayantī is the festival of the strongest possible faith, embodied in a being who is also the strongest physical presence in the cosmos. He is also chief of the Aṣṭa-siddhi and Nava-nidhi — he both possesses and bestows the supernatural powers and material treasures of yoga. To worship Hanumān is to ask for the strength to serve, the courage to leap impossible distances, and the modesty to never claim credit.
Pre-dawn
Bath, fresh clothes (red or saffron preferred). Visit a Hanumān mandir before sunrise if possible.

Hanumān is the deity children naturally love — the strong, brave, mischievous monkey-god whose stories never bore. Read them the Sundara Kāṇḍa highlights: the leap to Lanka, the burning of Lanka, the bringing of the Sañjīvanī mountain. Teach them the Hanumān Cālīsā chaupais one by one — even five-year-olds can recite the opening four chaupais. Have them apply sindūr to a Hanumān picture (with adult supervision). The story of how Hanumān swallowed the sun mistaking it for a fruit is the perfect bedtime story.
Hanumān worship is the most-portable Hindu practice — all you need is a picture, the Hanumān Cālīsā (audio or text), and consistent recitation. The protective dimension makes it especially relevant for diaspora families dealing with new environments and unfamiliar challenges. Saturday-evening Hanumān Cālīsā has become the most-common Hindu home-practice in NRI households globally.

Caitra Pūrṇimā (March-April) — the full moon following Rāma Navamī by six days. In Tamil tradition, observed on Mārgaśīrṣa amāvāsyā (December-January). Karnataka observes a 41-day vrata. Anjaneri and Hampi (Karnataka) consider their respective months as the birth-month — both are accepted regional observances.
