Shantadurga is the most popular form of the Hindu goddess Durga in Goa. She is the Kuladevata of several Goud Saraswat Brahmin and Karhade Brahmin communities. The temple was originally located at Keloshi but was shifted to Kavlem in 1566 AD to prevent its destruction by the Portuguese.

Shanta Durga Temple is a Hindu sacred place in Kavlem, South Goa, Goa, connected with Goddess Shantadurga. The temple belongs to the Shakta stream of worship, where devotees seek the Mother through darshan, aarti, kumkum, vrata, and festival observances such as Navratri.
A fierce battle occurred between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma prayed to Goddess Parvati to intervene. She took the form of Shantadurga (peaceful Durga) and placed Lord Vishnu on her right hand and Lord Shiva on her left hand, pacifying them and stopping the battle. The idol uniquely depicts this.
Major observances connected with this profile include Jatra (December–January (Margashirsha)), Navaratri (September–October). During these periods, devotees should expect heavier crowds, longer queues, and a stronger emphasis on aarti, utsav, and local temple customs.
A useful visit plan begins with the darshan window, then works backward through route, footwear and bag rules, offering guidelines, queue options, and local transport from Kavlem. For older shrines and high-crowd temples, early morning and non-festival weekdays usually give devotees more time for quiet prayer.
For devotional preparation, visitors can keep the practice simple: learn the main deity's name, carry only permitted offerings, observe modest dress, and close the visit with a short mantra, pradakshina, or dana where appropriate. This keeps temple travel connected to sadhana rather than only sightseeing.
