शंकराचार्य मंदिर
It is the oldest temple in Srinagar, dating back to 200 BCE, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is deeply revered by the Kashmiri Pandits.
Mythology
The hill was originally called Gopadri. The temple is closely associated with the great philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have visited Kashmir and mediated at this very spot, giving the temple and the hill its current name. This visit was crucial in the revival of Sanatana Dharma in the region.
