लक्ष्मीनारायण मंदिर (बिरला मंदिर)
It is the first of the many large temples built by the industrialist Birla family across India. The temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1939, on the strict condition that it would be open to all castes, especially untouchables (Harijans).
Mythology
The temple is dedicated to Lord Narayan (the Preserver) and his consort Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth). It was built to serve as a major central Hindu institution in the newly constructed British capital of New Delhi.
