Shukla Dwitiya of Ashadha (June/July) · Puri (Odisha), Odisha, Pan-India Vaishnava, ISKCON communities, Jagannath temples worldwide
Rath Yatra 2026 is listed for July 16, 2026, when Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra come out of the Puri Jagannath Temple in three great wooden chariots and travel to the Gundicha Temple. For devotees, the day is powerful because the Lord leaves the sanctum and comes onto the street, allowing everyone to take darshan. The three chariots - Nandighosha for Jagannath, Taladhwaja for Balabhadra, and Darpadalana for Subhadra - move along the Bada Danda as devotees chant 'Jai Jagannath' and pull the ropes. The festival is public, emotional, and deeply Vaishnava: the Lord of the Universe becomes accessible to the whole world.
Rath Yatra teaches that Bhagavan does not remain distant from devotees. Jagannath's chariot journey turns the temple outward: the deity comes to the road, the crowd becomes the mandap, and pulling the rope becomes a form of seva. The festival also carries the feeling of Krishna returning to Vrindavan, where devotion is not formal but full of longing. For a reader planning the day, the main point is simple: take darshan with humility, chant the Lord's name, receive mahaprasad if available, and remember that the Lord is coming out for everyone.
Early morning
Wake early, bathe, prepare the home altar, and chant Jagannath's name. If travelling to a procession, check the route, weather, crowd rules, and temple updates before leaving.
Pahandi
The deities are brought in ceremonial movement toward the chariots. Devotees watch with folded hands, chant, and avoid pushing toward the deity platforms.
Chhera Pahanra
The Gajapati king ritually sweeps the chariot platforms. This moment is loved because it shows that all are servants before Jagannath.
Chariot pulling
The chariots move along the Bada Danda toward Gundicha Temple. Pulling the rope is treated as a blessing where permitted, but safe crowd conduct comes first.
Gundicha stay
Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra stay at Gundicha Temple for several days. Local traditions include darshan, bhog, and Hera Panchami observances.
Bahuda Yatra and Niladri Bije
The return journey brings the deities back toward the main temple. Suna Besha and Niladri Bije complete the festival sequence in Puri's traditional calendar.
Mahaprasad · Abhada-style rice and dal offerings · Khichdi · Pakhala · Poda pitha · Sattvik sweets and fruits
Children understand Rath Yatra quickly when told that Jagannath comes out of the temple to meet everyone. Let them learn the three names - Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra - and draw the three chariots with different colours. If attending a procession, give them one simple job: chant, fold hands during darshan, or help carry water for the family.
Many ISKCON and Jagannath temples outside India hold Rath Yatra on the closest weekend to the tithi. Families can still observe the actual day at home with a small Jagannath picture, tulsi, diya, fruit, and chanting, then attend the community procession when scheduled.
