Puthandu (Tamil New Year)

కథ

Puthandu (meaning 'new year') is the Tamil solar new year marking the sun's transit into Aries (Chithirai month). The night before, families arrange a kani — an auspicious display of items including mango, jackfruit, bananas, gold, silver, and a mirror — so the first thing one sees on the new year morning is this auspicious sight. The tradition holds that what one first sees on New Year's Day will determine the nature of the year ahead.

విధి

• Arrange the kani (auspicious display) the night before
• Wake early and be led with closed eyes to see the kani first
• Wear new clothes and apply gingelly (sesame) oil before bathing
• Visit the temple for New Year darshan
• Prepare the Puthandu meal with six tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, astringent, salt)
• Receive elders' blessings and give gifts
