Nag Panchami

కథ

Nag Panchami is dedicated to the worship of serpents — naga devas — who are considered sacred guardians in Hindu tradition. Snakes are associated with Shiva (who wears serpents), Vishnu (who reclines on Ananta), and Ganesha (who wears a snake as a belt). The festival honours the five principal serpent deities: Ananta, Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka, and Pingala. On this day it is believed that serpents do not cause harm. The story of Astika saving the serpents from Janamejaya's snake sacrifice (in Mahabharata) is central.

విధి

• Draw or paint serpent images on the wall near the front door
• Offer milk, flowers, and sweets to snake holes in the ground or to serpent idols
• Worship the Naga image with flowers, turmeric, and sandalwood
• Recite the Naga Stotras and Mantra
• Feed milk to actual snakes where possible (through snake-charmers traditionally)
• Avoid ploughing or digging the earth on this day
