Vishu

कथा

Vishu is Kerala's astronomical new year and one of its most important festivals. The Vishukkani is the central tradition — an elaborate display arranged in a bell-metal vessel (uruli) containing a Krishna idol, golden yellow flowers (kani konna), rice, coconuts, vegetables, gold, and a mirror. Family members are led to see this auspicious sight with closed eyes as the first vision of the new year. The kani konna (cassia fistula) tree blooms specifically for Vishu, its golden flowers being synonymous with the festival. Vishukaineetam — elders giving money to children — is another beloved tradition.

विधि

• Arrange the Vishukkani the night before
• Wake before dawn and be led with closed eyes to see the kani
• Light a lamp in front of the kani display
• Proceed to temple for Vishukani darshan
• Elders give Vishukaineetam (money) to younger family members
• Wear new clothes and enjoy the Vishusadya (feast)
