Starting Chaitra Shukla Tritiya (3rd day of bright Chaitra) to Chaitra Purnima — 18 days · Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat
Gangaur is Rajasthan's most beloved festival — a celebration of marital bliss and the love between Gauri (Parvati, shortened to Gour/Gaur) and Isar (Shiva). Women make clay images of the divine couple and worship them for 18 days. Married women pray for the long life of their husbands; unmarried girls pray for a devoted husband like Isar. The festival begins on the day after Holi. The Jaipur Gangaur procession — with caparisoned elephants, folk dancers, and a palanquin carrying Gauri — is among Rajasthan's most spectacular parades.
Gangaur is Rajasthan's beloved Gauri festival, beginning after Holi and culminating around Chaitra Shukla Tritiya. Women worship Gauri, a form of Parvati, with Shiva as Isar, praying for marital happiness, fertility, and household auspiciousness.
The festival is famous for decorated Gauri-Isar images, folk songs, processions, and community celebration in Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and other Rajasthan regions. For unmarried girls it is a prayer for a good partner; for married women it renews grihastha dharma with beauty and devotion.
Gangaur makes household life sacred. Gauri is not worshipped as an abstract goddess only, but as the auspicious feminine presence that keeps family, fertility, water, food, and love alive. The songs and processions are not decoration around the ritual; they are how a community remembers that marriage and prosperity need daily care.
After Holi
Women begin daily Gauri worship, songs, mehndi, and simple offerings according to family tradition.
Festival days
Gauri-Isar images are decorated, songs are sung, and women gather for puja, story, and community visits.
Main Gangaur day
The final puja, procession, water offering, and farewell rituals are performed. In Rajasthan, public processions make the day especially visible.
Ghewar · Churma · Bajre ki roti · Dal baati churma
