Magha shukla panchami (January-February) · pan-india
Beginning of spring (vasant); Saraswati's birthday. Saraswati emerged from Brahma's mouth to bestow speech and music on the universe.
Vasant Pañcamī — Māgha śukla pañcamī (January-February) — marks the beginning of spring (vasant) and is consecrated to Devī Sarasvatī, the goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts. It is the day Sarasvatī is said to have emerged from Brahma's mouth — uttering the first words of speech, breathing music into the cosmos, igniting the first flame of intellect.
The day's date is fixed to Māgha śukla pañcamī because that is the day spring's first warmth begins to be felt across north India. The mustard fields begin to bloom in yellow; Sarasvatī's preferred colour is yellow; everything aligns. Saraswatī Pūjā became formalised in Bengal under the Pāla dynasty (8th-12th century) and remains the most-elaborate observance in the country — Bengali schools, colleges, and homes set up Saraswatī idols for one day with full pūjā.
The day is also called Sri Pañcamī, Madana Pañcamī, and Vāgīśvarī Jayantī. In Punjab, kite-flying is a long-standing Vasant Pañcamī tradition (predating Makar Saṅkrānti's kite popularity). In Maharashtra and Karnataka, it is the day for vidyārambha — the ceremonial first writing-letter for young children. Kāmadeva (god of love) is also worshipped on this day in some traditions — spring being his season.
Vasant Pañcamī is the festival of awakened intellect. Sarasvatī rides a swan (haṃsa) — the bird of discrimination, said to be able to separate milk from water. Her four hands hold a vīṇā (music), a book (knowledge), a mālā (concentrated practice), and a kamaṇḍalu (purity of source). Worshipping her on this day is asking for these four to flow into one's own life. The connection to spring is not accidental: just as the natural world awakens with the warming of the sun, the intellect awakens with the warming of the heart toward learning. Vasant Pañcamī is the day to begin any new study, any new instrument, any new art.
Pre-dawn
Bath, yellow clothes. Set up Sarasvatī's altar.
Morning (madhyāhna kāla)
Sarasvatī Pūjā with shoḍaśopachāra. Recite Sarasvatī Vandana ('yā kundendu tuṣārahāra dhavalā...'). Place books, instruments before her.
Mid-morning
Vidyārambha — ceremonial first writing-letter for children aged 3-5. The teacher or grandfather guides the child's hand to write 'oṃ namaḥ siddham' or 'oṃ hari oṃ' on rice or sand.
Afternoon
Visit Sarasvatī temples. Bengali tradition: married women apply alpana (rangoli) at the entrance to honour Sarasvatī.
Evening
Aarti, distribute kesar bhāt prasāda. Many families fly kites in north Indian / Punjabi tradition.
Kesar bhaat · Kesar shrikhand · Boondi laddu (yellow) · Yellow halwa
Vasant Pañcamī is a wonderful day for children. The vidyārambha — the first writing-letter — is an emotionally formative ritual that families across generations remember. For older children, this is the day to begin a new instrument or skill: the first guitar lesson, the first chess lesson, the first language. Kite-flying in north Indian / Punjabi families gives children an active outdoor festival they love. Tell them the story of Sarasvatī emerging from Brahmā's mouth — the cosmos was silent until she spoke its first word; this thought captivates them.
Vasant Pañcamī is gaining popularity in NRI communities, particularly Bengali ones — full Saraswatī Pūjās are now standard at Bengali Cultural Associations across the diaspora. For NRI families, this is the easiest festival to make children's-school-relevant: tie it to the start of a new year of formal study, especially for children just beginning to read.

Māgha śukla pañcamī. The morning hours (sūrya-rāhu rohita) are the prescribed pūjā muhūrta. Madhyāhna-kāla is when most homes perform the formal pūjā. Vidyārambha for children should ideally be at madhyāhna.
