श्री महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर
Bhasma Aarti participants arrive 00:30–02:00 (2 hrs early). General darshan from ~06:00 post-Bhasma Aarti. Garbhagriha: 07:30–12:00 morning, 18:00–20:00 evening.
Mahakaleshwar is one of only two self-manifested (Swayambhu) Jyotirlingas — the linga arose spontaneously from the earth rather than being installed by human hands. Uniquely, it faces south (Dakshinamukhi), the direction of Yama (death) — representing Shiva transcending death. It is the only Jyotirlinga where Bhasma Aarti is performed daily. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred Hindu cities (Sapta Puris). The site is also associated with the Mahakali Shakti Peeth (upper lip of Sati fell here per some traditions).
History
Mentioned by Kalidasa (~4th–5th century CE) in Meghadutam and Raghuvansha; his patron King Vikramaditya was closely tied to the temple. The Paramara dynasty (9th–13th century) built the temple in Bhumija style. In 1234–35 CE, Sultan Iltutmish of the Delhi Sultanate destroyed the temple and cast the Jyotirlinga into the Koti Teertha tank. The present temple was rebuilt in the 1730s–1750s by Ranoji Shinde's diwan Sukhatanakar Ramchandra Baba Shenavi, funded from his personal fortune during Maratha rule. The Mahakal Lok Corridor (920m, ₹856 crore) was inaugurated by PM Modi on 11 October 2022.
Mythology
King Chandrasena of Ujjain was a devoted Shaivite with a Chintamani jewel gifted by Shiva. Rival kings allied with the demon Dushan (invisible, by Brahma's boon) attacked the city. A farmer's boy Shrikhar and priest Vriddhi prayed with pure devotion. Shiva appeared as the terrible Mahakala — lord of time and death — annihilated Dushan and the armies with his third eye. At the devotees' request, Shiva agreed to reside permanently in Ujjain as a Swayambhu Jyotirlinga. The lingam faces south to subdue Yama (death), granting liberation.
