महाबोधि मंदिर
Bodh Gaya is the most holy and significant pilgrimage site in the Buddhist world. It is the exact spot where Siddhartha Gautama attained Enlightenment (Nirvana) and became the Buddha.
Mythology
In the 6th century BCE, Prince Siddhartha sat in meditation under a peepal tree (the Bodhi Tree) for 49 days. Upon defeating the temptations of the demon Mara, he attained supreme enlightenment here.
