Amarkantak is one of India's most sacred pilgrimage sites for multiple reasons simultaneously: 1. SHAKTI PEETH: The Kalmadhava Shakti Peeth, where Sati's upper lip fell, makes it one of the 51 sacred Shakti sites. 2. NARMADA SOURCE: Amarkantak is the origin of the Narmada River (Reva) — one of India's seven sacred rivers — which flows 1,312 km westward to the Arabian Sea. The Narmada Udgam (source kund) is within the temple complex; thousands of pilgrims perform the Narmada Udgam puja here, touching the water at its very origin. 3. SONE RIVER SOURCE: The Sone River, a major Ganga tributary, also originates near Amarkantak. 4. JOHILA RIVER SOURCE: The Johila (also a Sone tributary) rises here. This triple confluence of river-origin sacred geography is extraordinarily rare in India and makes Amarkantak a multi-tradition pilgrimage site drawing Shaiva, Shakta, and river- worship devotees.
History
Amarkantak's sacred history is ancient. The site is mentioned in the Puranas as Amrakuta (literally "mango peak") — an ancient hermitage and pilgrimage place associated with sages. The Narmada is described in Puranic texts as older than the Ganga, and the source at Amarkantak has been a pilgrimage destination for at least 1,500+ years. Medieval temples at Amarkantak include the Kalachuri-period (9th–12th century CE) stone temples — some of which survive in the town's temple cluster (Kartika Swami Temple, Durga Temple, Pataleshwar Temple). The Kalmadhava Shakti Peeth is integrated into this ancient temple landscape. Various sampradayas (Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakta) have established ashrams at Amarkantak, making it a multi-tradition spiritual centre.
Mythology
SHAKTI PEETH ORIGIN: After Sati's immolation and Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra severing her body, Sati's upper lip fell at Amarkantak. The goddess here took the form of Kali/Kalmadhava, and Shiva in the form of Asitanga Bhairava became her presiding guardian. NARMADA LEGEND: The Narmada River is said to be the daughter of Shiva — born from his sweat or meditation at this spot. She is also called "Reva" (she who moves swiftly). Puranic texts describe the Narmada as having the power to purify by mere sight (darshanmatra) — unlike the Ganga which purifies by touch. This makes the Narmada one of the most sacred rivers, and her birthplace at Amarkantak correspondingly sacred.
