Bhramari Devi is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, located at Trisrota in North Bengal, West Bengal. The presiding goddess Maa Bhramari — "the Bee Goddess" — is one of the most dramatic and mythologically rich of the goddess manifestations in Hinduism. Bhramari is the goddess who, per the Devi Bhagavata and Markandeya Purana, manifested as a swarm of bees (bhramara = bee) to destroy the demon Arunasura who had defeated the gods and could not be killed by conventional weapons. The bees of the goddess are the weapons of last resort — and her manifestation as the insect collective reveals the goddess's power to pervade and overwhelm through forms that appear small but act as a unified, unstoppable force. The site at Trisrota — the confluence of three streams — adds the sacred-water dimension to this already powerful Peeth.
Mythology
The Bhramari episode (Bhramari Mahatmya) from the Devi Bhagavata Purana and Markandeya Purana: The demon Arunasura (without arms and legs; some versions say with an undefeatable boon) conquered all three worlds and the gods. All conventional means of attack failed. The gods prayed to Adi Shakti, who manifested as Bhramari — "she who is like a bee" or "she who appears in the form of bees" — emerging from her own body as a vast swarm of bees that stung and destroyed Arunasura and his demon army. The goddess then declared that she would be known as Bhramari, the Bee Goddess, in this age. At Trisrota, this Bhramari form of the goddess is believed to be permanently present at the spot where a part of Sati's body fell (foot/ankle per most sources). The Bhairava Trimurtisha ("of the Three Forms" — a Shiva who encompasses Brahma-Vishnu- Maheshwara) is the male guardian at this Peeth.
