Kartik krishna chaturthi (October-November) · north-india, diaspora
Several stories: (1) Veeravati, who broke her fast prematurely and lost her husband, then resumed strict observance and revived him; (2) Savitri-Satyavan story interpreted in this fast-context; (3) Draupadi's vrat to safeguard the Pandavas.
Karvā Chauth — observed on Kārtika kṛṣṇa caturthī (October-November) — is the day-long fast undertaken by married women for the long life of their husbands. It is a uniquely women-led festival that has traveled from its Punjabi-Haryanvi heartland to become a pan-North-Indian phenomenon. Multiple foundational stories anchor it.
The most-told story is of Vīrāvatī, a young bride who fasted on her first Karvā Chauth without proper preparation, fainted from hunger, and was tricked by her brothers into breaking the fast prematurely (they showed her a 'moon' through a sieve held over the courtyard). At the moment of false moonrise, her husband died. Her unwavering devotion and renewed strict observance the following year (correctly, this time) revived him. The story established the rule: never break the fast before sighting the actual moon.
A second story-stream connects Karvā Chauth to the Sāvitrī-Satyavān narrative (Mahābhārata Vana Parva), in which the devoted wife Sāvitrī followed Yama himself to retrieve her husband's life. The Pāṇḍavas' Draupadī is also said to have observed this fast for the longevity of her five husbands during their forest exile.
Modern Karvā Chauth has expanded considerably. Bollywood films of the 1990s-2000s — particularly DDLJ (1995) — gave it nationwide visibility beyond its traditional Punjabi-Haryanvi-Rajasthani-UP base. The festival now sees observance in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bengal, and the South Indian diaspora. Beauty parlours in Delhi and Punjab take 12-hour bookings in the days before; mehndi appliers come to homes; sargi (the pre-dawn meal sent by the mother-in-law) has become an elaborate gift-economy.
Karvā Chauth is the festival of formalised marital love. The day-long nirjala fast (no food, no water) is a deliberate hardship — its merit is in the willingness to undergo it for another. Hindu thought distinguishes between śuddha-prema (pure love that needs no ritual) and prīti (the love that is willingly disciplined). Karvā Chauth is a ritual of prīti — a willing disciplining of love into a yearly vow. Modern critique points out the festival's gender-asymmetry (only women fast for men, not vice versa), and many couples now do mutual or alternating fasts. Both modes — traditional and modern — are valid expressions; what matters is the willingness to undergo for another's well-being.
Pre-dawn (4-5 AM)
Sargī — eat the pre-dawn meal sent by the saas (mother-in-law). Drink water until dawn (some traditions) or no water at all (strict).
Sunrise to sunset
Day-long nirjala fast (no food, no water). Apply mehndi. Decorate self with full bridal attire. Avoid heavy work (no cooking, no scrubbing).
Late afternoon
Group puja with other married women. Recite the Karvā Chauth Vrat Kathā. Pass the karvā around the circle (traditional ritual).
Just before moonrise
Stand on terrace or balcony with the puja-thaali ready. Watch for the moon.
Moonrise
View the moon through the channī (sieve). Perform arghya to the moon. Then view the husband's face through the same channī. He gives her water, then a piece of food. Fast is broken.
Evening
Full meal — usually cooked by the husband as a tradition of acknowledgement. Family meal together.
Sargi (paratha, feni, fruits, dry fruits) · Feni (special vermicelli) · Mathri · Kheer (post-fast) · Aloo paratha (post-fast)
Karvā Chauth is a women's festival but children participate as observers and helpers. Daughters watch their mothers prepare; many start observing their own (modified) Karvā Chauth at age 14-15 in anticipation of marriage. Sons learn what their fathers will need to provide. Make the moon-sighting a family event — children love the channī-game (looking through the sieve at the moon, then at father). For multi-generational households, Karvā Chauth is the rare day where saas (mother-in-law) and bahu (daughter-in-law) cooperate fully — a teaching moment for children watching that ritual.
Karvā Chauth in the diaspora is now well-supported. Indian-grocery stores stock karvās, sargi-ingredients, and Karvā Chauth Vrat Kathā books. Indian beauty parlours in major Western cities offer Karvā Chauth packages (mehndi, hair, makeup). For NRI women observing alone, the moon-sighting can happen on local-time moonrise (the spiritual significance follows the household, not Indian time). Video-calling with sasural during the moon-sighting is now standard practice.
