Traditional (attributed to Adi Shankaracharya)
Skanda Purana; Sanskrit Documents tradition
The Lingashtakam is an eight-verse hymn in praise of the Shivalinga, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Each verse strings together a chain of kennings — descriptive compound epithets — illuminating a quality of the Linga, and closes with the refrain 'tat praṇamāmi sadāśiva-liṅgam' (I bow to that eternal Shivalinga). A phalashruti closes the hymn, promising that reciting it in Shiva's presence leads to the attainment of Shivaloka.
