Goswami Tulsidas
Ramcharitmanas tradition, c. 16th century CE
The Hanuman Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn in Awadhi composed by the 16th-century poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas. Each chaupai (quatrain verse) praises a quality or deed of Lord Hanuman — the ideal devotee of Rama, embodying selfless service, strength, and unwavering loyalty. Recited by millions daily worldwide, it is considered especially potent on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The name chalisa comes from chālis (forty) — the count of its main chaupai verses. Tulsidas composed it in the Avadh region, and it remains the most widely recited devotional text in the Hindi belt.
