Vaikom Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in Kerala. It forms the famous 'Shiva Tristhalam' (three temples) along with Ettumanoor and Kaduthruthy temples. Worshipping at all three temples on the same day before afternoon is considered highly auspicious.
Mythology
The demon Khara obtained three Shiva Lingas from Lord Shiva at Chidambaram. He carried one in his right hand, one in his left hand, and one hung from his neck. Feeling tired, he placed the right-hand linga down at Vaikom. When he tried to pick it up again, it was rooted to the ground. Sage Vyaghrapada found it and established the temple.
