Umananda Temple

Umananda Temple is a Hindu sacred place in Guwahati, Kamrup Metropolitan, Assam, connected with Lord Shiva (Umananda). The temple belongs to the Shaiva stream of worship, where abhisheka, bilva offering, mantra japa, and evening aarti are central parts of the devotional rhythm.

According to legend, Lord Shiva created this island for his wife Parvati's happiness (Uma is another name for Parvati, and ananda means joy). It is also believed to be the place where Lord Shiva burnt Kamadeva (the god of love) to ashes when Kamadeva interrupted his meditation.
