Tulja Bhavani is considered one of the three and a half (Sade Tin) Maha Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra. Bhavani is worshipped as the family deity (Kuldaivat) of many families in Maharashtra, including the royal Bhonsle dynasty.
Mythology
According to the Skanda Purana, the sage Kardam and his wife Anubhuti lived here. After the sage's death, the demon Kukura harassed Anubhuti. She prayed to Goddess Parvati, who appeared as Bhavani and killed the demon. The Goddess then decided to reside on the hill to protect her devotees. She is also renowned for gifting the Bhavani Talwar (sword) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, ensuring his victory in establishing the Maratha Empire.
