Shamlaji is an important Vaishnavite pilgrimage center in Gujarat. The deity is worshipped as a dark-skinned (Shyam) manifestation of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna. It is highly revered by the local tribal communities (Bhil).
Mythology
There are several legends. One states that Brahma performed penance here, and Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to worship Lord Vishnu. Another says that the idol was found by an Adivasi while ploughing the land.
