Sabarimala is one of the largest annual pilgrimage sites in the world, with millions of devotees visiting each year. Lord Ayyappa is worshipped here as an ascetic (Brahmachari) in a meditative posture.
Mythology
Lord Ayyappa is the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini (the female avatar of Lord Vishnu), born to destroy the demoness Mahishi. After fulfilling his divine mission, he retreated to the Sabarimala hills to meditate. The temple was supposedly built by his foster father, the King of Pandalam.
