Murudeshwar Temple

Murudeshwar Temple is a Hindu sacred place in Murudeshwar, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, connected with Lord Shiva (Murudeshwara). The temple belongs to the Shaiva stream of worship, where abhisheka, bilva offering, mantra japa, and evening aarti are central parts of the devotional rhythm.

Ravana performed severe penance and obtained the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva. Shiva warned him not to place it on the ground until he reached Lanka. The gods tricked Ravana into handing the Linga to Lord Ganesha (disguised as a Brahmin boy) at Gokarna, who placed it on the ground. In anger, Ravana tried to uproot the firmly entrenched Linga, breaking it into pieces. The cloth covering the Linga fell at Kanduka Giri (Murudeshwar).

Major observances connected with this profile include Maha Shivaratri (February–March). During these periods, devotees should expect heavier crowds, longer queues, and a stronger emphasis on aarti, utsav, and local temple customs.
