मुरुडेश्वर मंदिर
Murudeshwar is home to the second-tallest Shiva statue in the world. The temple is built on Kanduka Hill, surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea. It is closely linked to the epic Ramayana and the story of the Atma Linga.
Mythology
Ravana performed severe penance and obtained the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva. Shiva warned him not to place it on the ground until he reached Lanka. The gods tricked Ravana into handing the Linga to Lord Ganesha (disguised as a Brahmin boy) at Gokarna, who placed it on the ground. In anger, Ravana tried to uproot the firmly entrenched Linga, breaking it into pieces. The cloth covering the Linga fell at Kanduka Giri (Murudeshwar).
