Mahaganapati is the eighth Ashtavinayak. Here Ganesha is worshipped as the supreme and most powerful form (Mahaganapati), who came to the aid of his father, Lord Shiva.
Mythology
The demon Tripurasura had received a boon of invincibility and built three formidable cities (Tripura). He wreaked havoc across the universes. Lord Shiva decided to destroy him but failed initially because he forgot to pay homage to Ganesha before starting his campaign. Shiva then invoked Ganesha at Ranjangaon. Ganesha appeared and blessed Shiva, who then successfully destroyed the three cities. The temple was built at the spot where Shiva worshipped Ganesha.
