कोणार्क सूर्य मंदिर
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, it is one of the grandest temples in India. Though the main sanctum (Vimana) has collapsed, the surviving Jaganmohana (audience hall) remains a testament to India's architectural brilliance.
Mythology
According to the Samba Purana, Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, was cursed with leprosy. He performed penance to the Sun God for 12 years at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga River and the sea (Konark), and was cured by the Lord. He then built a temple to Surya.
