It is the largest, tallest, and most ornate Hindu temple in the Khajuraho temple group, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It represents the pinnacle of Central Indian temple architecture.
Mythology
Built by the Chandela King Vidyadhara around 1030 CE to commemorate his successful defense of his kingdom against Mahmud of Ghazni. The temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva, the supreme destroyer, to thank him for the victory.
