काशी शक्ति पीठ — विशालाक्षी मंदिर, वाराणसी
Varanasi (Kashi) is the holiest city in Hinduism — described in texts as the 'city of Shiva,' the 'City of Light,' and the geographical manifestation of moksha (liberation). It is said that dying in Kashi is itself sufficient for liberation because Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra (liberation mantra) into the ear of the dying. Every major deity, tradition, and pilgrimage circuit passes through Kashi. Within this supremely sacred geography, the Vishalakshi Shakti Peeth sits near the banks of the Ganges — where Sati's earrings (kundala) fell, making this spot a Maha Shakti Peeth. The goddess Vishalakshi — "She of the Wide, All-Seeing Eyes" — is the presiding feminine power of the city. While Kashi Vishwanath represents the masculine (Shiva) pillar of Kashi, Vishalakshi represents the feminine (Shakti) pillar. Together, they form the supreme divine pair of Kashi.
