Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Prabodhini Ekadashi) is observed on Shukla Ekadashi of Kartik (October/November). The observance lasts 1 day. Principal deities or sacred focus: Vishnu. Dev Uthani (or Devotthan) Ekadashi marks the end of Vishnu's four-month sleep (Chaturmas). On Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (Dev Shayani), Vishnu goes to sleep on the primordial ocean. The four months of monsoon are considered a time when religious ceremonies like marriages and other auspicious activities are paused. On this Ekadashi, Vishnu 'wakes up' — and the auspicious season resumes. The day also marks Tulsi Vivah — the symbolic marriage of the Tulsi plant (Vrinda/Lakshmi) with the Shaligram stone (Vishnu). Observances include: Fast on Ekadashi (many do nirjala — no water); Perform Tulsi Vivah in the evening — marry the Tulsi plant to Shaligram or Vishnu idol; Decorate the Tulsi plant with bangles, saree, and flowers.
