Shukla Tritiya of Bhadrapada (August/September) · Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand
Hartalika Teej takes its name from harta (abduction) and aalika (friend) — Parvati's friend abducted her to the forest to prevent her forced marriage to Vishnu (arranged by her father Himavat), so that she could continue her penance for Shiva. This day commemorates Parvati's ultimate attainment of Shiva as her husband. Unlike Hariyali Teej, this is a stricter fast — nirjala (no water, no food), maintained even through sleeplessness. Parvati-Shiva idols made of sand or clay are worshipped and immersed the next day.
Hartalika Teej is observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, especially by women praying to Shiva and Parvati for marital harmony, a worthy husband, and steadiness in family life. The name is linked to the story of Parvati's friend taking her away so she could continue tapas for Shiva instead of accepting an unwanted marriage.
The festival is strict in many households: women fast, worship clay or metal images of Shiva-Parvati, listen to the vrat katha, and stay close to the mood of Parvati's tapas. It is important in North India, Nepal-linked Maithil practice, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra.
Hartalika Teej is about chosen devotion. Parvati does not receive Shiva casually; she earns the union through tapas, resolve, and refusal to abandon her path. For devotees, the fast becomes a prayer for the same steadiness: not just a good marriage, but the inner strength to choose dharma and keep a vow.
Morning sankalpa
Take sankalpa for the vrat according to health and family practice. Many observe nirjala, but modified fasting is acceptable where needed.
Puja preparation
Prepare Shiva-Parvati altar, decorate with flowers, suhag items, diya, fruits, and vrat prasad.
Katha and worship
Listen to or read Hartalika Teej vrat katha, offer flowers and bel leaves, and pray for steadiness, marital harmony, and Parvati's grace.
Parana
Break the fast according to family tradition and panchang guidance, usually after completing the puja rules.
Panchamrit (for puja) · Modak and other sweets (offered and then consumed after fast breaks)
Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Puja timing varies by city and, for devotees outside India, can shift by date; use a local panchang before following a strict nirjala vrat.
