Shukla Dwitiya of Kartik — two days after Diwali · Pan-India
Bhai Dooj celebrates the bond of brothers and sisters. On this day, Yamuna (the river goddess) worshipped her brother Yama (god of death) and invited him for a meal. Pleased, Yama blessed her that whoever receives a tilak from their sister on this day will be protected from untimely death. Sisters apply a tilak on their brother's forehead, offer aarti and gifts, and pray for their long life. Brothers give gifts in return. The festival parallels Raksha Bandhan in celebrating the sibling bond but is celebrated on a different occasion.
Bhai Dooj, also called Bhai Phonta, Bhau Beej, or Yama Dwitiya, is observed on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya after Diwali. It closes the Diwali family arc by bringing the brother-sister bond back to the centre, after lamps, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan, and Annakut.
The best-known story remembers Yamuna welcoming her brother Yama with tilak, food, and affection. Yama blessed the day so that brothers who receive their sister's tilak and meal with respect are protected and remembered with love. In Krishna traditions, another story says Subhadra welcomed Krishna after Narakasura's defeat with tilak and sweets.
Bhai Dooj is less about gifts and more about formal affection. The sister's tilak says, 'May you be protected and walk a dharmic path.' The brother's gift says, 'I receive this bond and will stand with you.' Unlike Raksha Bandhan, where the rakhi is the visible thread, Bhai Dooj uses tilak, aarti, food, and a shared meal to renew the relationship after Diwali.
Morning preparation
Sister prepares the tilak thali, sweets, and meal. Brother bathes, wears clean clothes, and arrives for the ceremony where possible.
Tilak and aarti
Sister applies tilak, places akshat, performs aarti, offers sweets, and prays for her brother's long life and good conduct.
Gift and meal
Brother gives a gift or dakshina and accepts food from his sister. The shared meal is the emotional centre of the day.
Distance observance
If siblings live apart, families often do video tilak, send sweets, or keep a short prayer at home rather than skipping the day completely.
